COPD Assessment & Management

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) makes everyday breathing harder, and small things, a chest infection, missed medicine, or poor inhaler technique, can tip a stable week into a frightening flare. Pharmacies can play a steady, practical role in keeping COPD as controlled as possible and helping you act early when it worsens.

What is COPD?

COPD is a long-term lung condition, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, where the airways are narrowed and the lungs are damaged, making it hard to breathe out fully. The main symptoms are breathlessness (especially on activity), a persistent cough, and bringing up phlegm. Smoking is the leading cause, and while damage cannot be reversed, the right management can ease symptoms, reduce flare-ups, and protect quality of life. COPD is diagnosed by a doctor, usually with a breathing test called spirometry.

How pharmacies support COPD

A pharmacy COPD service is about day-to-day management and early action, working alongside your GP:

  • Inhaler technique. COPD inhalers only work if the medicine reaches the lungs. The pharmacist checks and corrects your technique across whatever devices you use, and advises on spacers.
  • Understanding your medicines. Helping you understand your maintenance (regular) inhalers versus reliever inhalers, and why consistency matters.
  • Action plan support. A COPD action plan helps you spot a flare-up (exacerbation) early and know what to do. The pharmacist can check yours is current and encourage you to get one from your GP.
  • Flare-up awareness. Learning the early signs, more breathlessness, more or discoloured phlegm, more coughing, so you act before it becomes severe.
  • Quit-smoking support. Stopping smoking is the single most effective thing to slow COPD, and the pharmacist can help with a real plan and stop-smoking aids.
  • Vaccination prompts. Flu, COVID-19, and pneumococcal vaccines matter more when you have COPD, because chest infections hit harder.

Who is it for?

People diagnosed with COPD, especially those who flare often, have recently been unwell or hospitalised, use several inhalers, still smoke, or have never had their technique and plan checked. Carers of people with COPD also benefit from understanding the warning signs and the action plan.

Recognising a flare-up early

A COPD flare-up (exacerbation) is when symptoms get noticeably worse than your normal day-to-day. Catching it early, when breathlessness, coughing, or phlegm increase, and following your action plan can keep you out of hospital. Many plans include what to do and when to start any “just in case” medicines your doctor has provided. The pharmacist can help you understand your plan so you are not guessing in the moment.

Safety: when to get urgent help

Call Triple Zero (000) for severe breathlessness, blue lips, confusion or drowsiness, chest pain, or if you cannot speak in full sentences. See your GP promptly if your symptoms are worsening, your phlegm changes colour or increases, or you have a fever, as you may need treatment for a chest infection. Do not wait out a serious flare.

How it’s regulated in Australia

COPD support at a pharmacy is delivered by pharmacists registered with the Pharmacy Board of Australia and complements the diagnosis and management led by your GP and, where needed, a respiratory specialist. National guidance and patient support come from Lung Foundation Australia and Healthdirect.
