Among the new things Queensland pharmacists can do under the state’s expanded scope of practice is something refreshingly simple and preventive: painting protective fluoride varnish onto teeth to help stop decay before it starts. It’s a small, low-risk, evidence-backed treatment that pharmacies — open long hours and easy to reach — are well placed to offer. As the name makes clear, this particular service is specific to Queensland.

What is fluoride varnish application?

Fluoride varnish is a high-concentration fluoride coating that a trained health professional paints directly onto the teeth. It sets quickly on contact with saliva and releases fluoride to the enamel over the following hours. Fluoride strengthens enamel against the acid attacks that cause cavities and can help re-harden the very earliest signs of decay.

Most people get everyday fluoride from fluoridated tap water and toothpaste, but a concentrated, professionally applied varnish gives extra protection where it’s most needed. It’s a well-established preventive measure — used routinely in school and public dental programs — and it’s particularly effective at reducing decay in children and in anyone at higher risk.

Who is it for?

Fluoride application is aimed at people at higher risk of tooth decay. That includes children, people with a history of frequent cavities, those with dry mouth (often a side effect of medicines), people with high-sugar diets, and anyone with limited access to regular dental care. A pharmacist can help judge whether you or your child would benefit. Specific eligibility and any age requirements are set under the Queensland program.

This is a preventive service, not a dental check-up or treatment. You should see a dentist — not rely on this service — if you have tooth pain, sensitivity, bleeding or swollen gums, a broken or loose tooth, visible decay, a non-healing mouth sore, or any swelling or signs of infection (which can be urgent).

How it works at the pharmacy

It’s quick and comfortable. In a clean area, the pharmacist (or a trained team member) dries the teeth, then paints on a thin layer of varnish using a small brush. There’s no drilling and no discomfort; it takes only a minute or two. Afterwards you’ll be asked to avoid hard foods, hot drinks and brushing for a short period so the varnish can do its work — the pharmacist will give you exact timing.

The pharmacist will usually pair the treatment with simple, high-value prevention advice:

• Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and spit rather than rinse afterwards.
• Reduce how often you have sugary food and drink — frequency matters as much as amount.
• Drink fluoridated tap water where available.
• Keep up regular dental check-ups.

There may be a fee for the application. Because this is a Queensland-specific, relatively new service, phone ahead to confirm a pharmacy offers it.

Safety and the role of your dentist

Fluoride varnish is safe and widely used. Let the pharmacist know about any allergies before treatment, as some varnishes contain resin (colophony). The key point is that this service adds to — and does not replace — proper dental care. Keep seeing your dentist for examinations and treatment, and seek dental care promptly for any pain, swelling, bleeding or a non-healing sore. The pharmacist will refer you to a dentist whenever your mouth needs more than prevention.

How it’s regulated in Australia

This service operates under Queensland’s community pharmacy scope of practice arrangements, established through Queensland health legislation and overseen by Queensland Health. Participating pharmacists complete additional training, follow defined protocols, and are registered nationally with the Pharmacy Board of Australia. Equivalent services may or may not exist in other states and territories, which run their own programs — so this one is, for now, Queensland-specific.
