Sometimes it makes sense to combine boosters into a single shot. The dTpa-polio vaccine adds protection against polio to the standard diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough booster, useful when you need polio cover too, including before travel to certain destinations.

What is dTpa-polio?

dTpa-polio (also written dTpa-IPV) is a combined booster protecting against four diseases in one injection: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), and poliomyelitis (polio). It uses the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) component alongside the dTpa booster. Combining them means one needle instead of two when you need both.

Who is it for?

It suits people who are due for a tetanus/diphtheria/whooping cough booster and also need polio protection. The most common reason for the polio component in adults is travel to areas where polio remains a risk, where a booster may be recommended (and occasionally required) before you go. It can also be used where an adult’s polio cover needs updating. Polio is otherwise covered in childhood through the routine schedule.

Getting it at a pharmacy

Trained pharmacist immunisers may provide this combined booster to adults, subject to state and territory rules and stock; phoning ahead helps, as it is less commonly held than plain dTpa. The pharmacist screens you, gives the vaccine, observes you for around 15 minutes, and records it on the Australian Immunisation Register. If it is for travel, mention your destination and departure date so timing and any other travel vaccines can be considered together.

A note for travellers

Safety

Like dTpa, the combined dTpa-polio vaccine has a strong safety record, with mild, short-lived side effects such as a sore arm or low fever being most common. Tell the pharmacist about severe allergies, past reactions, pregnancy, or current illness.

dTpa-polio vaccines are approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration; polio (IPV) is part of the funded childhood schedule under the National Immunisation Program, while adult/travel boosters may be private. Pharmacist immunisers administer under state and territory rules and record doses on the Australian Immunisation Register.
